My Friends say I Don't Need to go to Bartending School!

You're not too old to be a bartender photo!Saying you don't HAVE to go to bartending school is like saying you don't HAVE to go to college to get a professional career in the business world.

While this may be technically true, most any person who has a college degree will tell you they are glad they took the time and effort to get an education.

The hospitality industry is no different. Training is knowledge and knowledge is power! Sharp managers try to hire the most qualified staff and a bartending school graduate has proven that they are interested enough in their career to get professional training.

Anyone who laughs at a person's education is simply showing their own ignorance! I attended bartending school at the age of 35 after a successful 17 year career in the bar and restaurant industry.

What Bartending School Did For Me!

I was a territory manager supervising 29 restaurants in 3 states at the time with a company that I had made the decision to leave after 13 years of service.

I had applied for a position with Applebees as an Area Manager. When they offered the job to me, it was everything I wanted, except that it was about $10,000.00 a year less in salary than I had asked for. Their reason was that I would be supervising more bar managers than I was accustomed to in my last job. I did not accept the job at that time.

I made the decision to attend a bartending school and get a certificate to prove to them I had the knowledge and ability to command the full salary that I wanted.

I did a little research and signed up for a two-week, forty hour bartending course. I sat through the classes with a police woman, 2 ESPN camera men, a Taco Bell manager, a construction worker, a secretary and a couple others who I never learned their occupation. I was amazed at what I learned and how much I didn't know about my own industry.

Once I graduated from bartending school, I sent my certificate to the Applebees Human Resource department and they responded within two weeks with the same job offer only with a $10,000.00 yearly salary increase. That's what I got for my $550 bartending course!

I never accepted the job with Applebees. I bought a bartending school in 1991, won the best flair bartender in Ohio contest in 1993, '94, '95 and '98 and am now the President of Professional Bartending School of America.
